Since the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, so many dramas have been witnessed in the country's democratic practise.
While some individuals set record in a positive way, some of them ended up destroying their own achievements.
Let's take a look at political dramas that have played out in the lower chamber, the House of Representatives where the youngest Speaker and the first female Speaker of the House Representatives were all impeached in less than one year they took over power.
Salisu Buhari
The story of Salihu Buhari is one that has been referenced to guide young generation not to a acquire power through deception and forgery.
Shortly after Nigeria returned to democratic government in 1999, Salisu Buhari took over the reign of the House of Representatives as the youngest Speaker in the history of Nigeria. He was elected first Speaker of House of Reps after the 1999 election.
Shortly after, Salisu Buhari was faced with series of allegation bordering on certificate forgery and age falsification.
Buhari was a young Business man from Kano. He had claimed that he graduated from University of Toronto with Bsc in Business Administration and also claimed that he completed his one year compulsory NYSC at a company, Standard Construction, in Kano. In his age, Buhari also claimed that he was born on January 3, 1963.
An investigation was launched by
an investigative Magazine to verify the claims of the young Speaker, it was however, discovered that Buhari never graduated from University of Toronto, he was never a Corp Member and it was also discovered that the celebrated 'young Speaker' was born on January 3, 1970 and not 1963 he claimed.
This placed his age at 29 years at that time and not 36 years he claimed. It was also discovered that he was unqualified to contest for the office of House of Representatives as the 1999 constitution stated 30 years minimum at the time as constitutional requirement to run for the office of House of Representatives.
At the height of the allegation, Buhari who had earlier refuted the allegations levelled against him summoned the courage to address Nigerians after weeks of
of debate on his eligibility to continue as Speaker of the House.
Buhari confessed before Nigerians that he forged his University certificate and falsified his age to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
After his confession, Buhari humbled himself and stepped down as the first Speaker of House of Representatives in 4th republic on Thursday July 23, 1999.
Salisu Buhari only spent six weeks as Speaker of House of Representative. He eventually resigned his membership of House of Representatives.
As if this was not enough, Buhari was later arrested and charged for certificate forgery and sent to two years imprisonment. He was later pardoned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and was only made to pay fine.
Buhari has seen moved on with life. However, 14 years after, he was appointed by Goodluck Johnathan's administration in 2013 as member Governing Council of University of Nigeria, UNN, Nsukka.
Patricia Olubunmi Foluke Etteh
Hon. Patricia Olubunmi Foluke Etteh simply known as Patricia Etteh was the first female Speaker of House of Representatives.
Patricia Etteh was born August 17, 1953 and became the first female Speaker of House of Reps on June 2007. She set a new record in the Nigeria political history when she emerged the first female Speaker of House of Reps despite numerous oppositions.
However, the celebration that followed Etteh's emergence was shortlived when she was indicted of corruption after she unlawfully spent N628 million to renovate her official residence and that of her Deputy. She was also indicted of unlawfully buying 12 official cars.
At the height of the allegation, the first female Speaker of House of Reps stepped down on October 30, 2007 when the situation became too much for her to manage.
Just like the yongest Speaker, the first female Speaker of House of Reps only spent five months and resigned from the office because of corruption charges.
While some individuals set record in a positive way, some of them ended up destroying their own achievements.
