The Danger of Almajiri As Lockdown Continues

Every child is a special gift of God and as such deserves to be cared and catered for. It is however, heartbreaking to note that in Nigeria, millions of children are left to fend for themselves and forced into street begging. Many of these children take cover under bridges, and slums while depending on the daily arms they get from good samaritans.

According to the Minister of education, Adamu Adamu, Nigeria has over 10 million out of school children. The Almajiri system has been blamed on number of times for significantly contributing to the over 10 million out of school children. These children are mostly in the Northern Nigeria.

These heartrenching revelations brings tear to eyes, it brings to fore the fall of family institutions and the negligence of parents in their responsibility to cater for their children.

The Danger of Almajiri As Lockdown Continues

The millions of Almajiris are at the greater risk of contracting Civil-19 and their survival at this trying time remains slim.

It has already been established that Almajiris constitute high percentage of infected people in the North. In Kaduna for example, a total of 21 Almajiri children deported from Kano have been tested positive for Coronavirus.

The figures of infected number of Almajiris are not surprisising, when every child eats and sleep at the warmth of their parents' arms, Almajiri children have no food to eat, they have no house to sleep, they didn't defied the lockdown, they have been living on the open street, and forced to seek for alms even at the danger of Covid-19.

Almajiri children are humans, they are innocent children with flowing blood unfortunately they have been forced into miserable life by a failed society, no food, no where to sleep, no more alms and being infected with deadly coronavirus. Almajiris are at the greater risk and their survival at this trying time remains slim.

Almajiri Children May End Up Being The Largest Carrier Of Covid-19

If urgent steps are not taken, Almajiri children may end up being the greatest carrier Covid-19. Available indicators have already shown this time bomb.

The decision reached by the Northern governors to return Almajiri children to their respective states appeared to be a late decision, many of them deported from Kano to Kaduna tested positive for Coronavirus. If it was possible to do this, what has been stopping them before now?

In most Northern states, Almajiri children are still out looking for something to eat and exposed to the danger of Covid-19 pandemic and risk infecting people they come in contact with while seeking for alms for daily survival.

How Did Almajiri Become A Menace?

Almajiri, a corrupt version Arabic word "al-muhajirun" which literally mean person who leaves his/her place of residence or country to live elsewhere.

It is a form of Islamic system of education practised in the Northern Nigeria which involves children leaving their homes to live with Islamic scholars and learn about their religion.

Over the years, the system has been corrupted with people giving birth to number of children only to be transported to other states where they will live by seeking for alms on the street and exposed to harsh economic condition without formal education and shelter.
Many of their instructors have also been blamed on number of times for sending the poor children to seek for alms only to be collected without anything to eat or wear.

Where The Government Got It Wrong

Before now, there have been campaigns on the need to scrap Alamijiri system or a total overhauling where the children will remain in their respective states and seek for Islamic knowledge with formal education.

These has often hit brick wall, many elites who championed the campaign have been attacked on several occasion amongst which is the former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Government has not done enough to curb the menace of the Almajiri system and make every parent take responsibilities of their children's welfare.

It's, however, funny to see Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State transporting the Almajiri children back to their various states after contracting Covid-19, an idea raised by former Emir Sanusi and was flayed for that.

The federal government of Nigeria must rise to end the menace of Almajiri system; it's not about region, it has become a national problem, a national embarrassment.
