Despite Outcry, Kogi LG Workers Get 35% Salaries

Despite several intervention and outcry by the Kogi Chapter of Organized Labour, Kogi workers under the local government will earn 35% salaries for the month of April.

The umbrella body for the local government, the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Kogi Chapter had insisted on the usual 50%percent salaries they had been receiving but the effort could not yield any positive result as the state government reduced it to 35% for the month of April.

According to the available records, the salaries of the local government workers in Kogi State is about N1.7 billion, which has always been paid with government taking overdraft.

However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, a new policy guidelines has been in place by the Central Bank of Nigeria on overdraft and loans which forced the banks to reject overdraft request by the government and the subsequent slash in the payment.

Recall that we had earlier reported that the Kogi chapter of NLC had rejected the pay cut, and insisted on full salaries but the NLC leaders shifted ground in a meeting held at the Kogi State Government House few days ago when it became obvious that the government could not full salaries.

However, available information has shown that the Kogi State government's reason for the slash in the workers salaries at this critical time is due to its inability to access overdraft.

The state government blamed the pay cut in the inability to draw overdraft which has been practiced in the state to augment the salaries.
