OPINION: The Conflict Between the Choice of the 'Power that be' and the Choice of the Masses in Kogi Central | By Isah Bala

We may not have the impetus to challenge the power that be and the self-acclaimed kingmakers that have dragged their injustice to our threshhold, as a law abiding citizens who have freedom to decide who to support, we will continue to hoot against the undemocratic practises aimed at fronting the inordinate ambition.

We are in a society where truth is considered an abominable act and where supporting an individual in a different platform of the stooge is considered a criminal venture.

But is it not pathetic that in search of a messenger that will do the whims and caprices of the 'power-house' the so-called kingmakers opted for decoy to be the message carrier amidst ravens?

Whilst I still hunt for the right words to describe the nauseating acts of those who failed to realize the fact that power is transient and have assumed the position of demi-god and preoccupied themselves with how to spread their tentacles which dragged us to our gory past in Ebiraland, I came across the beautiful work of an illustrious son of the soil, Umar Sadiq Azimazi who did justice to the old ill that has found its ugly head back to our land.

Umar Sadiq Azimazi contends in his book, "Ebira at Crucial Crossroads" that, "as for those minds may atrophy by furious pretext for what is being genuinely felt of social ill-doing, being analysed concretely and dispassionately the characters of nauseating culture of new Ebira society occasioned by these governing men. I however hide not my passion, the cry of my soul and the burgling of my heart for the endangered innocent people who are entitled to happiness, but whose destinies of belonging and honour was submerged in the flow of personal prejudice, beclouded their hope and aspiration and that of a society in a repressive state.

Azimazi went further to pour my innermost feelings when he posits that, "those concerted egocentric individuals are to me social misfits who are only punctuating our social-political life with overfilled cesse-pool of self-drive motive.... If my furious pretext for what I considered uninherant character that has equally given room to negative things of life in our society is being taken as a rebellious act. This of course, is a remarkable course in one's life that a man should not fear of being called "a rebel" and fear not to say it or fight it even if it require life to further the cause.

"Unfortunately here is a society blessed with all the ingredients of greatness. But behold also the society whose destiny is tragically short-circuited by greed, moral corruption, clannish malice and unending string of betrayals. If one cannot quarrel with this cruel fate, this insatiable irony of being so near greatness and yet being so far from it. I am wondering what one quarrel with at all."

The cause of the renewed political thuggery in Kogi Central cannot be farfetched. It is not unconnected to the self-driven motives and the quest to have total grip of the territory which invariably caused the conflict between the stand of the masses and that of the power that be.

The people have the right to choose who should earn their mandates and represent them, and it becomes evil and self- driven motive when the leader embark on a mission to force his stooges on the people against their own will.

The people is entitled to
pick a leader among themselves who is heart-driven, one who identifies with the common man on the street and understands what the society needs on every level without any form of intimidation or force. This ought to be an era where the will of the people superceed the will of their leader.

What, however remains obtainable in the unveiling events is the fact that halting a status quo is never an easy ride which of course, is playing out in Ebiraland.

In every generation, there's always special people designed to be the voice of others, carry the burden of others and fight for the rights of their fellow compatriots to right the wrongs and set the country to attain the true meaning of its creed which of course always come with mountainous challenges, impediments and sabotages.

We must realize that in getting things right, it wouldn't come on a platter, we must be ready to pay the prize, grow beyond financial inducement and see beyond premodial sentiments.

Before Black American's right could be achieved, they paid the prize. On June 23 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. led 125,000 people on a Freedom Walk in Detroit. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28 in the same year is the largest civil rights demonstration in human history with nearly 250,000 marchers which changed the history of Black people in America.

During those road walks and march, a lot of things happened, businesses were paralyzed, movement stricted, logjam at its pick but the people were resolute, and at the end they got things right.

It's either now or never, we must get it right and have someone who can be our voices and wouldn't be cowed in the committee of intellectuals at the Red chambers.

Without any prejudice to others justling for senate position in Kogi Central, I put to you to  consider antecedents, competent, and the zeal to fight for the cause of Kogi Central senatorial district and vote Natasha Hadiza Akpoti for Senate.

You must know that the five thousand naira at the polling booth will only solve part of your immediate need while you suffer for it in the next four years.
