Shite Clash With Police In Abuja Over El-Zakyzaky
Members of Shiite Islamic sect in Nigeria protesting for the release of their leader El-zakyzaky clashed with police on Tuesday in Abuja when police reportedly dispersed them with teargas.
Our source gathered that before the police stormed the venue of their rally to disperse them, Professor Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had addressed them calling for the release of El-Zakzaky.
Our source added that, the protesters were reportedly peaceful as they marched along streets in Abuja, and converged at Unity Fountain, but the police sprayed them with teargas after an attempt to disperse them with water failed.
However, the provocation from the police forced the protesters to march on the streets.
Odinkalu while addressing the protesters shortly before they were dispersed with teargas,
he called on the federal government to respect the rule of law by releasing the group leader, Sheikhb Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
Odinkalu is believed to have reacted to the ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja on December 2, 2016 which l ordered his release and awarded a cumulativebsum of N50 million to the family of the Shiite leader.
The court also ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to provide Zakzaky and his family with a new accommodation and security in any part of Kaduna or the northern region that they prefer within 45 days. The ruling has not been obeyed by the government
