Kogi APC Splits As The Tussle For Assembly Speaker Continues

Kogi State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has split into factions over the tussle for the seat of the speaker of the State House of Assembly.



According to a reliable source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the current crisis started few months after the ruling party won Kogi West in the November 16 governorship election and the senatorial election in the state.

The sources explained that the success which was achieved by the combined efforts of the Kogi West APC structure led by the incumbent speaker of the House of Assembly, Matthew Kolawole and an Assembly member, Chief Benjamin Olowodola, has divided the APC into factions when both camp tried to grab the position and have the major stake in governor Yahaya Bello's appointment for second term.

The source recalled how Chief Olowodola led faction re-joined APC following the reconciliation of Governor Yahaya Bello and Hon. James Faleke who was the party's deputy in 2015 election, adding that the cold war has been ongoing until the new entrants endorsed Olowodola as the leader of the party in Kabba District last week.

Thee source further explained that Kolawole-led faction objected the move on the ground that the Speaker is the highest political office holder from the land and remains the leader of the party and cannot be challenged.

However, one of the factional member of Olowodola's led faction who is the current chairman of APC in Kabba-Bunu local government, Chief Oloniyo, said the adoption of Olowodola was borne out of commitment towards the development and progress of his people.

Other stakeholders in the zone, called on both factions to play politics by the rules of avoid any further division.
