Opinion: The Race for the Red Chamber - Kogi Central Senatorial District | Mohammed Abdulmaleek

In our desperate bid to re-engineering the economy and the wellbeing of the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District through individual's efforts and our desire to reemphasize the integrity and moral codes in our political landscape, Kogi Central Senatorial District need a person who can deliver and spend qualitative time in consulting the people, listening to the people's problems and be acquainted with the needs and demands of the people.
Barr.Natasha Hadiza Akpoti

However, listening to the people with vested interests or listening to people with influence or selective focus groups is one thing, but listening to the ordinary people at the grassroot will do the miracle.

We need a person that will listen to the people's cry and erase fears of political deception; a person that will listen and address the suffering of the people and who will not break promises and betray the people's trust. A person that will definitely, in shaa Allah, take us to the promise land as our Senator come 2019.

Masses want politicians to stand up and address the issues that matter to the people, as they want honest commitments with vision and a leader that can be trusted. A politician that can be trusted and who is armed with all it takes to chart the new course for the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District for the next four years.

Though, if political level play ground is allowed and democratic process is ensured, our political issues in Kogi Central Senatorial District would be a thing of the past. With all these happening, there would be no need to expect barrage of lies and distortions of history, though after several years of political dispensation, politicians got very cosy with power - and they are now more frightened than ever of losing their grip on it. And when the people get frightened, as we all know, they get negative, and they get nasty too.

Confronting masses face to face with realities and say the truth, as they are, will greatly help the politicians instead of whispering lies about for cheap political relevance. We expect politicians to talk about their background, records, achievements and draw up their manifestos for comparison by the people so as to earn people's confidence and trust.

However, people have a duty to make it happen the way they deem fit by choosing the right person to make a different as an investment to give their children the best possible future and guarantee of people's future with open representation, passing power from the top to bottom for the benefits of the people.

We have heard much about trust from our politicians but they cannot expect to be taken on trust. They have got to earn people’s trust. Trust comes from being straight with people. It comes from being consistent in your principles and policies. It comes from sums that add up.

Some politicians have proved that they cannot be trusted. They have failed to prove that they are worthy of our trust. What they should have set out to do in the first place is to earn people’s trust and nothing else. Because of absence of truth, people with integrity have stuck to their core values and consistent beliefs. For these reasons, people have stuck consistently to the principle and policy that protects their interests.

In the next political dispensation, no more political ruthlessness and false promises from the politicians whose concerns is to perpetuate themselves in political offices. Our politicians fail us by not offering a clear and sincere commitments to ensure that people's confidence and trust are protected.

However, everyone knows that in the real world, you don’t get something for nothing. Masses are not happy when politicians promise them free of this and free of that while people knew that these are hollow words unless they are matched with dedicated actions and resources. It is no good in saying that you will do something - this year, next year, sometime, never, because we know you will never do anything that way. All the systems have been rendered useless for too long by the successive political office holders through their woefully and abysmal performance. Our politicians needs to start thinking positively by enthroning justice and fairness to make a difference.

When it is time for elections, a candidate with good and clear manifestos will earn people's respect and votes. It will be the right time for victory. What do I mean by victory? I mean by sending experienced and well educated force with high integrity and well conversant with the problems of Kogi Central Senatorial District to the upper and lower houses to fight for our course, it becomes our victory; a victory for ourselves, children and grandchildren.

Through this process, there would be a reasonable numbers of politicians who may not be happy with the masses but in as much as people would want to be sure that their votes count, it has to be straightforward. There is only one way to make our votes count. And, that is to vote for what we want. To vote for what we believe in.

And if you believe, like other people do, that in the next general election, we have got to protect our votes; we have got to look for the right person and above all, we have got to ensure that the most committed and trusted person won the election instead of the otherwise. Then, the vote that does not count, the vote that does not make the difference, the ‘wasted vote’ is the person that does not deserved our votes.

If you want a better and good representation, then the only way you will get them is by voting the right person. And the vote that does not count, that would not make the difference, is the vote for the wrong person - because such person would not do anything to better the lives of the people. The person would not spend good time with the constituency neither will there be good plans and development to benefits the people. Such person would not be available to the constituents and would act unprecedented.

People have decided to fight the 2019 general election on the awe-inspiring to make difference and elect the person of people's choice and that would be a mass triumph of hope over experience. Then, the question is not whether the person will break the promises. Which promises that would be broken, if the right person is elected and the person is determined to right the wrongs and make real difference to the needs of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Now, it is time for something different. If you want a change of direction, not just a change of person - then don't waste your vote. If you want new priorities and not just politics as usual - then don’t waste your vote. Don’t vote for more of the same. Don’t be conned into voting from fear. Vote for the things you believe in.

As we all know, campaign is short-term and it is about winning votes. It is political thing - focused on winning, while crusade is about beliefs. It is about the long term and it is about winning arguments. It is about reaching out beyond politics - beyond winning election. Now, it is time for a crusade for the new political direction in Kogi Central Senatorial District. A crusade for a new politics. A crusade for new opportunities. As we are preparing for the next elections, we need a new crusade - to build Kogi Central Senatorial District fit for our children and grandchildren. A crusade to give them the best and possible future; a crusade to give them new opportunities and hope.

Do we have to vote for those who see only the same old answers?

Do we have to vote for those who trumpet the same old sound bites?

Do we have to vote for those who feel safest in vthe old policies of confrontation?

Or, do we have to vote for people who believe that they can make a difference?

The choice is yours. If you believe in Barrister Natasha Hadiza Akpoti's crusade to build our Kogi Central Senatorial District fit for our children and grandchildren join her for your future and that of your children and grandchildren.
