I Will Make Workers' Salary A Top Priority, End Poverty In Kogi - Gov Yahaya Bello In 2016
Governor Yahaya Bello was first sworn in as the fourth executive governor of Kogi State on January 29, 2016 at the popular Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, Kogi State.
The event that heralded Yahaya Bello's emergence was dramatic and the first in the political history of Nigeria.
Abubakar Audu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, govrrnorhsip candidate in the 2015 governorship election in the state was coasting to victory when it was announced that he had died of heart attack and after several legal interpretations and tussles within the party, APC settled for Yahaya Bello who was the first runner up during the primary election.
Yahaya Bello inherited Abubakar Audu's votes and eventually won the re-run election against the former governor of the state, Captain Idris Ichala Wada and became the youngest governor in Nigeria.
With these events that heralded Bello's emergence as the governor of the state and being from the minority Ebira tribe who has never governed the state since its creation in 1991, Kogi State became a beehive of guests from all walks of life who came from within and outside the country to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Yahaya Bello who emerged the governor of the state in such a dramatic turn of event.
During Yahaya Bello's inauguration, his speech titled "Promise Made" was one of the best ever delivered in the history of the state governor's inauguration and he left a mark for both the guests and the citizens of the state to recall.
Yahaya Bello who was in untrollable tear as he narrated his life story as an orphan raised by his mother, promised to change the condition of the state and make every citizen of the state has access to quality living condition.
One of his famous promises was the workers salary he promised to make a top priority and change the living condition of the civil servants in the state.
Bello who lamented that the statistics of poverty in the state was not rossy, promised to take decisive actions to rescue the state from poverty.
Bello knowledged that nothing can be achieved in the face of corruption, he then promised to fight corruption and run and open government accessible to the citizens of the state.
Bello who announced to a cheering audience said, “I hereby declare and affirm that Yahaya Bello administration will have zero tolerance for corruption".
Before he ended the speech, Yahaha Bello knew the level of povery in the state and knew the high hope the people of the state had on him as the youngest governor in the country, he begged the citizens of the state for one thing which was their support and he said, “I would appreciate, and I ask for nothing, other than you give me the benefit of the doubt as we set off”.
Yahaya Bello who tagged his administration as New Direction, thereafter unveiled his blueprint to the people of the state which he tagged "New Direction Blueprint" that captures his developmental ideas for the state.
The governor had explained that the blueprint marshals the plans for building a new Kogi State free from corruption, ethnic rivalry, where judiciary will be independent, independent legislature, civil service reform and makes the state to be one of the developed in the country.
