Override Buhari on Electoral Act, IYC urges NASS

The Ijaw Youth Council has called on the National Assembly to override the veto of President Muhammadu Buhari on the 2018 Electoral (Amendment) Bill.
IYC President, Mr. Eric Omare, who made this call on Friday while speaking with Saturday PUNCH, said the refusal of the President to assent the bill was personal and not for the sake of the nation.
Omare explained that the content of the Electoral Act would prevent the rigging of election, especially as Nigerians prepare to vote in the 2019 general election.
He said, “We condemn it (refusal to sign the Electoral (Amendment Bill) as being unpatriotic; it raises personal interest over and above national interest.
“President Buhari’s reasons for not signing the Electoral Act into law are weak, feeble and unacceptable. He is afraid of electoral failure; it is because he is afraid that if the Electoral Act is signed into law, he may not win the forthcoming election.
“That is why we have called on the National Assembly to override the President and veto his refusal to sign the Electoral Act into law.”
On the proposed parliamentary system of government, the IYC president stated, “What is significant is that it (Bill on Parliamentary system of government) is coming from members of the National Assembly.
“Ordinarily, we would have thought that they are the ones that would oppose it. It is a thing of interest and a welcome development and we are in support of the move because parliamentary system of government will reduce cost of governance.
“We know that the Presidential system of government is expensive to us, but in parliamentary system, regions will be able to control their resources.”
