After 60 Years of Existence, Ihima Students' Union Elects Muyiba As First Female National President
The oldest students' union in Kogi Central, Ihima Students Union (ISU), Tuesday, elected Comrade Yusuf Avosuahi Muyiba as the first ever female president of the union's National Secretariat after sixty years of existence.
Muyiba emerged the first female National President of the oldest students' union in Ebiraland having pulled a total of 170 votes to defeat her closest revival, Comrade Mathew Samuel who pulled a total votes of 76.
Muyiba, the author of "Oyiza Destiny" had served as General Secretary of the union before emerging as the first female National President of the oldest students' union in Kogi Central.
Speaking shortly after being declared as the National President of the union, Muyiba said it has always been her innate desire to serve the union, adding that she will use the privilege to contribute her quota to societal building especially the welfare of students of Ihima origin.
Ihima Students' Union came into existence in the year 1959, the union originated from Ahmadu Bello University and University of Ilorin as the pioneer higher institutions in Nigeria which made these two institutions to be the then National Secretariats.
The union came up as a need to bring together all Ihima indigenous students learning in various higher institutions across Nigeria, which gave birth to the motto, "Education for Unity and Development."
Some of the founding members whose names could be recalled included; Late Prof. Peter Asun, Mall. Moshood Umar and other eminent personalities numerous to mention.
Prominent early comrades of the union also included, Dr. Philip Salawu, former Deputy Governor, Kogi State who had served as an executive of the union, Mr. Abdulmalik Abdulkarim, former DG Kogi State Bureau of Information Services and Grassroots Sensitisation, who served as a Secretary General of the union, Hon. (Dr) Idris Jimoh Jolly, former deputy PDP State Chairman, Kogi State, just to mention but few.
ISU was also the first students' union in Kogi Central to come up with a publication when the union published ISU ALMANAC in 1981 which had Mr. Usman Tijani Ozienewo as the chairman of the media team and Col. Zubair (rtd) as one of the members.
As part of the education programme of the union, the union organized annual Spelling Bee for primary schools, Quiz and Debating competition for secondary schools and scholarship programme for outstanding students and less privileged.
