OPINION: Natasha Is A Victor For Daring the Status quo | Isah Bala

Without mincing words, contemporary Ebira narrative will definitely be incomplete without dedicating a larger portion to Barr Natasha Hadiza Akpoti, the woman who out of mountainous challenges and impediments showed the strength and relevance of women in societal building and gives hope to thousands of other women within and outside the shores of Kogi State.

While the state helmsman used the state machineries to frustrate her and claimed victory by crook. It was, however, visible to the blind that the contest wasn't between Natasha and her fellow contenders. It was between a woman who against all odds strived to change the story of her people and the state helmsman and other minions who are accidentally in control of the instrumentalities of the state.

Amidst the heartbreaking obstacles, Natasha was able to resound the avowal of Queen Amina of Zaria, Oluwafunmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Margaret Ekpo, Queen Moremi Ajasoro, Onono Idogido of Ebiraland amongst others. She faulted the belief that women are not to be heard, and has shown that women's unquantifiable roles can change the society, and defied all odds to establish the worth of women in a society deeply rooted in patriarchy belief.

As Moira Rayner, in her paper A Pound of Flesh: Women, Politics and Power in the New Millennium, which she delivered at the Clare Burton Lecture, calls the tendentious views of patriarchy “a pound of flesh” from Shylock’s bargain in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, to signify that, in her view, women who seek political office or engage in formal politics expect to pay an extortionate fee for the bargain.

Natasha however steadfastly refused to be cowed down and “erased” from public memory by the patriarchy belief in Ebiraland and Nigeria at large and despite plethora of attempts, odium, media loathe and threats to ignominiously consign her into the dustbin of history, she has refused to be intimidated and fought with spirited gusto.

As Leonardo da Vinci wrote in his notebooks long, long ago, "Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence", Natasha refused to keep silent while things are going wrong and presented herself for the change she desired to see.

To this end, Natasha is a victor for treading the path of justice, Natasha is a victor for leading a lone fight in her quest to change the narrative of her people in the face of threat and sabotages by the forces of the state, Natasha is a victor for daring the status quo, Natasha is a victor for we know the people of Kogi Central entrusted her with their mandates and will soon be reclaimed.
