An 8-year-old girl, Nuroh Nasir, has emerged the winner of the 2019 edition of the Faith Unites Muslim Charity Initiative (FUMCI)’s Qur'an and Hadith competition.

According to Legit.ng, the young girl defeated other nine contestants in Qur'an category to emerge the best while she also beat four other contestants in Hadith category during the grand finale of competition held in Lagos Mainland on Sunday, December 22.

The event was witnessed by eminent scholars within the state including the former commissioner of home affairs and Lagos Amir Hajj for 2019, Abdul-Hakeem Abdul-Lateef, who admonished the participants and the parents to be dutiful to their creator and be with good companions.

Speaking at the event during his closing remarks, the chief Imam of AbdulAzeez central mosque, Ebute-Meta area of Lagos state, Sheik Muhammad Mahmud Yaqub, commended the winner including first runner-up - Umar Akinola, second runner-up - Abdul-Rahman Adebayo, and the third runner-up - Zainab Akinola, for the exceptional display of their talent in the Quranic recitation and commentary on Hadith.

Having spent 17 years of his life learning and teaching the glorious Qur’an in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sheik Mahmud Yaqub, said the competition could be likened to the ones he had attended in Makkah.

He said: “In the last 17 years, I have not had the opportunity of attending Qur’an competition that has substance and is well-organised like the FUMCI's children award. Reciters in the Qur’an and Hadith categories are superb. They remind me of my days in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."

"I am really touched by their performance especially the winner of the Qur'an and Hadith category - Nuroh Nasir. She and Umar Akinola really impressed me. If their parents would allow, I would like them to be in my custody to further their Quranic education because I am so overwhelmed by their performance. The confidence exhibited by Nuroh is too much. I pray Almighty to continue to guide and guard them."

He also gave them some financial gifts to encourage them after which he urged the parents to make the learning of Qur'an and Hadith a priority to their children.

Other categories of the competition included: Solat, Fiqh and Adab and Zainab Akinola who came second in Hadith and first in Solat also got the outstanding prize.
