ECOWAS Court Dismisses Suit By Kogi Community On Boundary Dispute
The ECOWAS court has dismissed a suit initiated by seven chieftains of Ette, Olamaboro local government area of Kogi State against the Nigerian government.
The chieftains alleged a threat to their right to existence and self-determination following a boundary dispute between the state and Enugu state.
The presiding judge, Justice Friday Chijoke held that the case brought before it was inadmissible as it was outside the human rights mandate.
The court said issues of boundary dispute lie within the purview of the national boundary commission.
Counsel for the federal government Bashir Imam commended the court for effective handling of the case.
Counsel for the plaintiff Festus Oguche however tasked the government on ensuring that the boundary commission respects internal instruments relating to the location of the community.
The plaintiffs had sued the federal government claiming that it failed to guarantee the protection of the community.
