Maryam Sanda Fights Her Death Row As Police Want Appeal Court To Uphold Fed High Court Ruling

While many Nigerians are in doubt if Maryam Sanda who was sentenced to death by hanging for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, is still in prison, the Nigeria Police have come out to make a demand that will add more problem for her.

Following the declaration of Abuja Federal High Court on January 27, 2020, which sentenced Maryam to death by hanging, nothing much has been held about her which kept many Nigerians wondering if Maryam has been pardoned and sent free.
Available information has, however, shown that Maryam is still behind bars in Kuje prison but currently contending her death row at the Appeal Court, Abuja.

In what appears to be a demand that will add more problem for Maryam, the Nigeria Police Force in the Federal Capital Territory have come out to urge the Appeal Court in Abuja where Maryam is contending her death row to affirm the death penalty imposed on Maryam Sanda.

In the Federal High Court judgment that drew nationwide coverage, Justice Yusuf Halilu had held that circumstantial evidence had proven that Maryam "fatally" stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello to death in their Abuja residence on November 19, 2017.

The Pains And Regret Of Maryam Sanda Behind Bars In Kuje Prison

Five months after Maryam was sentenced to death by hanging, the mother of two is still behind bars without much access to her children she so much loved as a younger mother.

Maryam might have acted based on anger that led to the death of her husband but I don't believe Maryam ever envisaged the nationwide embarrasement and condemnation.

The pains and regret for Maryam Sanda in the last five months behind bars waiting for her death to come is unimaginable, the pain of a young mother knowing she may never have access to her children and raise them in a way she wants is one nobody can imagine.

But it is definitely too late for Maryam to turn back the hands of time to undo her mistakes and simply walk out of the marriage rather than killing her husband.

The Struggle To Contend Her Death Row

In an efforts to contend her death row and be able to train their children, on February 19, 2020, Maryam filed 20-ground of appeal, praying for an order discharging, and acquiting her.

The mother of two on death row contended that Justice Yusuf Halilu of Abuja Federal High Court who sentenced her to death by hanging was tainted by bias and prejudices resulting in her being denied her right to fair hearing.

Maryam Sanda noted that she was convicted based on circumstantial evidence despite the fact that there was reasonable doubt arising from the evidence of the witnesses in her favour.

It should be noted that Maryam appeal at the appellate court is not based on plea, Maryam Sanda still argues and maintains her initial stand that she did not kill her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, but died by accident after falling on shisha pot.

Nigeria Police Fight Harder To Get Justice For Bilyaminu

However, in the argument filed by the counsel to the Police to the appellate court, the police argued that contrary to the appellant's contention, the trial judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu, properly evaluated the evidence in arriving at the judgment which sentenced Maryam Sanda to death by hanging.

The Police lawyer, James Idachaba who confirmed the brief of argument to newsmen on Sunday, argued that the brief that is seeking to set aside the judgment that sentenced Maryam Sanda to death would serve as an incentive to angry and unhappy spouses to take the life of their partners.

The Police lawyer stressed that affirming the judgment imposed on Maryam Sanda by Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Abuja Federal High Court would serve as deterrent to others who wished to commit the crime of culpable homicide, adding that Maryam Sanda was guilty of killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, and deserve the death penalty imposed on her by the trial judge.

The Pains Of The Innocent Children

As Maryam fights to upturn her death sentence and regain her freedom again, the innocent children who know nothing of the happenings have been subjected to bear the lifetime pains that would have been avoided.

If Maryam regains her freedom and come back to raise her children alone, things will never be the same again. The innocent children will never experience the love of a father and would be made to live with the pains that their own mother killed their father in cold blood. If Maryam failed to regain her freedom, the pain of losing both parents at tender age for an avoidable deaths will be with them forever.

The Beautiful Beginning Of The Two Families Ended In Tragedy

The union of the Sandas and Bellos ended in a tragedy after the death of Bilyaminu. The beautiful beginning ended in a sad end, with Bilyaminu's family seeking for Justice for their son. Justice for Bilyaminu means the beautiful daughter Inlaw, Maryam, who they so much loved be killed for Justice to be served.

If Maryam eventually upturn her death row, the two families may never come back together again and the seed of hatred and enmity will be there forever.

Bilyaminu Bello's family loved their beautiful daughter Inlaw but not at the expense of their son, their love for Maryam stopped the moment it was declared that Maryam murdered her husband, their own son.

At the end, justice may make the two families end the beautiful beginning in a tragedy of losing Bilyaminu and Maryam while the children suffer what they know nothing about.

This is one case with two many consequences, this has definitely teach many Nigerians lesson that it is far better to walkout of marriage than to allow your anger to take better part of you that will make you kill your spouse.
