Group under the aegis of Movement Against Gender Abuse (MAGA), on Wednesday staged peaceful walk in Kaduna to condemn the incessant cases of rape in the state, commending the State Governor, Mall. Nasir El-Rufai on his recent proclamation to sign the law that recommends death penalty by hanging for rapists in the state.

The group who carried placards with different inscriptions, registered their displeasure at the Kaduna State Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, said it has become necessary for them to leave their comfort zones to embark on peaceful walk in condemning the scourge of rape in Kaduna State and Nigeria.

Addressing the group, the Chief Executive Director of Community Mobilization, Mrs Sa'adat Mahmood, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner for Ministry of Human Services and Social Development appreciated the group for coming out at a time like this to support the fight against the scourge of rape in Kaduna State and Nigeria.

According to her, rape cases has become rampant during COVID-19 pandemic, adding that research has been launched in various sectors to find out the causative factors of the sudden rise in rape cases across the country.

Mrs Mahmood who bemoaned the incessant cases of rape in the country decried that there are available cases where a father raped his two underaged daughters and a recent case where a boy of 25 years raped his 85-year-old grandmother.

While commending Movement Against Gender Abuse, the Director said it has become necessary for all stakeholders to join the war against the scourge of rape in the country.

The Director disclosed that the Ministry has four sexual adult centres in the state to attend to victims of sexual abuse, adding that the ministry is also rehabilitating rape victims in the state while making sure the culprits won't evade justice.

Also speaking, the convener of the group, Mrs. Hyendua Tarfa said they were at the Kaduna Ministry of Human Services and Social Development to support the fight against rape and to declare their support for Governor Nasir El-Rufai on his readiness to sign the law that recommends death penalty by hanging for rapists in the state.

The convener added that they were out because they could no longer sleep in their closest as children and adult are being abused sexually on daily basis.

"We want to plead with the lawmakers to hasten the law against rape, women and children are the tools of the society and when they are affected there will be a general problem.

"I was embarrassed when a lawmaker said women should know how to dress to avoid rape, what of the babies on pampers that are being raped?

"We are calling federal government to declare state of emergency on the scourge of rape in country, we can no longer sleep because of the fear of unknown.

"We want to plead with other state Governors to emulate what Kaduna State Governor, Mall Nasir El-Rufai has done. He has proven that he is a father with a large heart, and ready to shield the residents of the state", she said.

Commending the Commissioner of Human Services and Social Development on the rehabilitation of rape victims in the state, she disclosed that the group is ready to help rape victims to overcome the trauma of rape.

While speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the group, Mr. Peter Shirsha noted that men don't want to leave the war against rape to women alone, calling on all men to join the war against rapists to protect their wives and daughters.

"The reality is that, a rapist is callous, he does not have the sense of humanity, we are waging a strong woman against rapists.

"Rape is more of a pandemic than the COVID-19 the world is currently fighting, male child is not also safe in the hands of rapists. All hands must be on deck to see to the end of this problem", he said.

On the same vein, one of the members of the group, Mrs. Vanessa Johnson said, the rape cases are horrific, adding that it is time to work the talk as anyone could be a victim.
