Natasha Ajaokuta Advocacy Finally Pays As Buhari Sets to Travel to Russia for Agreement
The five year Ajaokuta advocacy by Ajaokuta campaigner, Barr Natasha Akpoti has finally paid as President Muhammadu Buhari sets to travel to Russia for Ajaokuta steel company agreement on Sunday.
According to the minister of mines and solid minerals development, Olamilekan Adegbite, "the main feature of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Russia is to discuss the reviving of the steel company with president Vladimir Putin of Russia, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Adegbite said the Russians have shown interest to help Nigeria revive Ajaokuta with their own money.
The minister said: “They want to put Ajaokuta back and we are looking at different methods to engage them.
“Because it is almost completed, they bring in some money to finish what is there and operate it for a while; realise their investment, profit and transfer it back to Nigeria.
“I think this is the best path to revive Ajaokuta and I believe within the tenure of our time, we will achieve this.”
Olamilekan Adegbite, had earlier said that some sections of the Ajaokuta Steel Company would begin operation before the end of the year.
The minister gave this revelation when he received the Russian ambassador to Nigeria, Alexey Shebarshir, in his office.
It could be recalled that Natasha Akpoti who is well known as Ajaokuta campaigner has been advocating for the revival of the giant steel company in her senatorial district which she said is capable of leading Nigeria to actualizing industrialization dream.
In her speech at the sectoral debate on steel at the National Assembly in 2018, Akpoti explained that to achieve Ajaokuta steel revival, Nigeria must engage Russia who are the original builder of the steel company.
She had said, "I know many will talk about why am I promoting Russia, why am I not promoting China and India. With due respect to every country's steel capabilities, the greatest steel plant in China today and five of the biggest steel plants in India citing belayer for the twelve consecutive year has won the best steel plant in Asia was built by this same company. But why is a very big question, what has Russia done and why are we shy away from approaching the people who actually envisaged this dream for the completion?"
