Now That the Deadly Coronavirus is Here With Us

It's Ebira axiom that holds, "don't wait for the time of war before preparing the armaments". This can be said to be the present predicament that has befallen Nigeria.

While the scourge of the deadly Coronavirus was sweeping across the globe and rendered the self acclaimed almighty China, Russia, Italy, France, Iran, Germany, UK, Brazil, Israel, US and whatnot powerless before the rest of the world without solution to the deadly virus, our Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire was busy making noise upandan that we are strong and capable of handling Coronavirus.

I do not know if the honourable Minister follow the heart wrenching stories of how Coronavirus has killed 2,788 people in China alone, infected more than 83,000 worldwide. I do not know if the honorable Minister was aware that Wuhan, the epicenter of the deadly virus with its 11 million population has been
under lockdown since January 23, when China cut off transport links to the city and ordered the closure of many public spaces, making it the largest known quarantine in the history of mankind.
I do not know if the honourable Minister was aware that despite the technological knowhow of China and the rest of the world, the world is yet to find a solution to curtail the scourge.

Now that the deadly virus is here with us, I hope our government officials will not choose the path of blame game or seeking for prayer warriors to kill the 'evil spirit of Coronavirus' instead of curtailing the spread of the deadly virus in the best way possible. Our government must realize that Coronavirus is not like any other disease.

Saudi Arabia has halted the lesser Hajj (Umrah) to prevent the spreading of the virus, Iran put a temporarily ban on Friday Jumah prayer to curtail the spreading of the virus. These are hard decisions taken by countries to curtail the spreading of the deadly virus which of course, prove the deadly nature of the virus.

We must not witness another Dasuki gate where money meant for purchasing of arms to fight Boko Haram was shared and acclaimed men of God were alleged to have gotten their share of the millions to organize prayers against Boko Haram. Coronavirus must be handled with all manner of sincerity and tactical approach to save this country.

Isah Bala.
