Media And Damage Control 101: My First Friendly Fire | Nazir Adinoyi Abdulsalam

The media team of the kogi state governor apparently looks overwhelmed by the astute level of professionalism and lack the capacity  required to discharge their burden of responsibility. The litany of backlash and accusations from the public is highly disturbing and disappointing, making the governor more vulnerable to unnecessary violent criticism.

The unguided response of some of the governor's aids most times provokes unfriendly reactionary tendencies thereby exposing the governor to public ridicule. Mostimes GYB gets unfairly criticised because of the undoings of his media team and his appointees.

Since the inception of this government, it has been one media controversy or the other. They once landed the governor in a serious national scandal with the PVC dual registration saga. However you want to look at it, it was an avoidable incidence any competent media directorate can handle. But because they wanted to be seen as performing or better yet up to the task by their boss, they feed every thing 'officially' and 'unofficially' to the media and attack anybody who dare hold a rather diverse or contrary opinion to theirs.

Most of their attempts to defend their principal always end up making more enemies for him and many avoidable intricacies. The unhealthy rivalry with Sen. Dino Melaye has attracted several subtle backlash from the Senate president Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu due to lack of astute capacity to handle crisis by GYB'S media personnel and his many appointees. As if that's not handful enough, GYB'S media team is still playing into the grand plan of Sen. Dino by attacking Gov. Emmanuel Odom of Akwa Ibom.

At a critical time like this when you need all the allies there is, feuding a brother governor who doesn't pose any direct economic or political threat to your 'sovereign' state is uncalled for and counter productive to the young governor's future political expeditions. His aids should be more concerned with illuminating the government's developmental strides by engaging the unsuspecting and gullible masses about their laid down 'new direction' blueprint and making friends for the government by respecting opinion moulders and be more mild and accommondating.

As the world gets more and more digitally global by the day where every government functionary are now media appendages of the government and most citizens are now social media inclined and self proclaimed activists. Certainly, some of the media personnel and to a large extent appointees of the governor need intense orientation on damage control as it relates to handling the reputation of a high profile personality like the governor of a state.
