Ekweremadu Berates Kogi Attorney-General For Spending N12m On Melaye's Recall

The deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, has berated the action of attorney-general of Kogi state, Ibrahim Muhammad, for allegedly spending the sum of N12 million for advertorials to make a point over the on-going recall of Senator Dino Melaye.

Ekweremadu questions Muhammed's lack of grasp of constitutional provisions with regard to recalling a sitting lawmaker from the National Assembly.

The deputy Senate President made this known during plenary on Tuesday, July 11, raised a point of order to draw attention of the chamber to the advertorials by Muhammed, in which the attorney-general criticised his last week submissions at the Senate on Negate's recall, The Cable reports.

Ekweremadu noted that the advertorial which was published in about five national dailies gulped about N12m just to respond to his comment.

Citing section 68 (2) of 1999 Constitution as amended, he insisted that it was the Senate that gives effect to recall at the appropriate time.

The  Senate's tweets on the issue below:

“I’m worried if the Kogi state Attorney-General has actually passed Law School, because he ought to have understood the import of legal provisions as against what he sponsored in the papers,” he said.

Ekweremadu therefore called on the Kogi state House of Assembly to investigate the attorney general for waste of resources in order to recover those funds.

“Mr President, distinguished colleagues, you will agree with me that these advertorials were in five papers and it amounts to about N12 million.

“I therefore call on the state House of Assembly to investigate with the purpose of recovering the money which should be used to pay workers salaries," he said.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has allegedly released a date for the verification of the signatures put down for the senator's recall.

The development was made public in a notice by the commission which was posted on a twitter handle, @jag_bros.

According to the released notice, the exercise will take place on August 19, from 8am to 2pm, across all polling units in the Kogi West senatorial district.
