Needless Social Media Summit And The Wailing Of The Disappointed Hailers | Adejoro Cornelius Onimisi
The so called social media summit in Kogi State that saw the convocation of men and women with strong connection to the seat of power is not only shameful but an unfortunate eye opener to the already established feelings that the government has lost touch with the people in whose interest it ought to work.
If a government is working genuinely for the interest of the people by making life meaningful through infrastructural development, quality education and provision of basic social amenities, there would be no need dolling out cash for people whom are referred to as big swingers and shapers of public perception through social media.
Sadly, all these are happening at a time when secondary school teachers are on strike and those of primary schools have lost all motivation to teach due to non-payment of salaries of teachers and other workers for several months.
Consequently and expectedly, the gathering of the so called Social Media Influencers led to a backlash from home-based hailers who felt relegated and neglected in the invitation for that ‘unholy’ powwow. Well, this must have left a big lesson for those that are smart enough. Hailers of government who often go about insulting critics and perceived enemies of the government just to keep their meal tickets were shown the class they belong by being sidelined in the said summit, and they quickly went on rampage to show their grievance.
While their grievances may not be out of place, the commonsense should be clear in their brains also that people must make themselves relevant and break from poverty through hard work and genuine commitment to their calling, skills and/or career. Devoting one’s life to sycophantic chanting of needless, unmerited and unsolicited praise songs is to make mockery of one’s integrity and put self respect to question.
One question that still begs for answer is: are those employed and being paid with taxpayers’ money actually taking responsibilities? If a special adviser on new media with unbelievable twitter followers of only 53 thinks there are no social media influencers within and see the need to waste funds on influencers outside the state, then what is his job? Its shameful that people have lost sense of self evaluation and this must be corrected as we will all stand one day to give account of our deeds to God.
