I’m obeying doctors’ orders – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari says there is tremendous improvement in his health but he cannot return home because his doctors have not cleared him to do so.
Buhari, who spoke 96 days after he commenced the latest round of his medical vacation abroad, yesterday, was quoted as saying: “I have learnt to obey my doctors’ orders rather than being the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctors are absolutely in charge.”
He had left Nigeria for the United Kingdom (UK) for medical treatment on May 7.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, his principal was addressing members of his media team who visited him.
The team, led by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji, Lai Mohammed, also had Adesina; the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu; Personal Assistant on DigitalOnline Media, Lauretta Onochie; and the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
The visit came on the heels of the protest by the OurMumuDonDo movement asking the President to return home or resign, which rocked Abuja, the federal capital, for most of last week.
The statement by Adesina said Buhari expressed the desire to come back to Nigeria when he received the presidential media team, and the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, at Abuja House, London.
It said, “When the team expressed delight at the much improved health of the President, he retorted: “I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge. I’ve now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed.”
“On how he felt hearing different conjectures about his health, an amused President Buhari said he followed events at home closely, lauding Nigerian television stations, and the media generally, for keeping him informed.
“When told that prayers were going on fervently for him, not only in Nigeria, but all over Africa, and round the world, a delighted President said: ‘What we did in The Gambia early this year fetched us a lot of goodwill on the African continent. It gave us a lot of latitude. I thank all those who are praying. May God reward them.’
The statement also stated that Buhari sent appreciation to all Nigerians, expressing hope that he would be with them soon.
‘National Grand Solidarity Walk’
Meanwhile, a group, The True Democrats in Nigeria, says National Grand Solidarity Walk In Support of Buhari/Osinbajo Administration holds tomorrow at Unity Fountain, Abuja.
“Sequel to the recent unfortunate political happenings in Nigeria, with the central issue of the news peddled on the medical vacation of President Muhammadu Buhari, an act, maliciously and mischievously being promoted by some unpatriotic and unguided people, who do not even appreciate the collective responsibility of preserving the integrity of the Nigerian state, and sadly patronized by the Nigerian media”, the group said in a statement yesterday, that “it is therefore against this backdrop that, a good number of progressive and development organizations across the thirty six states of the federation, have resolved to, through a collective engagement of all other genuine political activists, true democrats and concerned Nigerians, organize a Solidarity Walk in Abuja, to serve as a mark of appreciation for the significant and unimaginable positive impacts the Buhari-led government has made, and to dissociate the right thinking and true Nigerians from unfounded and unjustified agitation for the unconditional and quick return of President Muhammadu Buhari from his legitimate medical vacation in London
“The event is expected to be attended by over one hundred thousand Nigerians from across the states of the federation and Abuja.
“The crowd is also expected to stage a walk from the Unity Fountain to the Presidential Villa for the presentation of a position paper on behalf of the participating organizations to the Acting President, His Excellency, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.”
