We’re Tired Of Percentage Monthly Pension – NUP Tells Kogi Govt

Pensioners in Kogi state have called on the state government to end the era of percentage pensions. 

In a statement issued in Lokoja on Friday by the State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Engr. Clement Ohida, they lamented over the persistent percentage payment of monthly pensions to local government retirees. They also frowned at the irregular payment of gratuity by the state government. 

Ohida said retirees in the state are still being faced with challenges of non implementation of minimum wage pension for retired senior citizens and lack good health scheme for all categories of pensioners. 

He stated that the state government has also failed to harmonize pensions for both state and local government retirees after the 2003 harmonization exercise. 

He appealed to pensioners in the state to remain prayerful while they hope God will touch the heart of the government to pay listening ears to their cries. 

While assuring them that the NUP executive will leave no stone unturned to reach a comfortable zone for pensioners, Ohida expressed optimism that through continuous unity of purpose, the story of retired citizens will change for the better. 

“While we commend the state government’s efforts at meeting the benefits of the state retirees, we wish to draw the attention of the plight of the numerous local government retirees, including the teaching and non-teaching staff of basic education schools who retired after meritorious service to the nation. 

“There are many problems and challenges facing our retired senior citizens, of which we have highlighted some above. 

Please, the state government should help us address this problem, as things are currently getting out of hand for our retirees who served the state meritoriously,” he stated.
