Court Sentences Graduate To Jail Over Fraud

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, the state capital, has sentenced a man, Olamilekan Osho, to six months’ imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretences.
Osho, a 20-year-old graduate of Computer Engineering Technology from the state-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, was charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for claiming to be a United States soldier, thereby defrauding unsuspecting members of the public. Having presented himself to be an American marine soldier to his victims, the convict was said to have dispossessed victims of different sums of money.
The convict was arraigned on a five-count charge, which bothers on fraud.
Having pleaded guilty to the charge, the prosecution counsel, Dr Ben Ubi, prayed the court to sentence Osho accordingly.
The trial judge, Justice Bode Adegbehigbe, agreed that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and found Osho guilty of the offence.
The judge sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment.
According to the court, the prison term took effect from the day of the judgment.
The court also ordered the convict to “forfeit a sum of N1m to the EFCC as a restitution to the victims of the crime.”.
