Kogi Institutions Strike Continues
Sequel to the state Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting held on, 1st June, 2017 at the NLC Secretariat Lokoja, it was unanimously agreed that the industrial action embarked upon by Kogi State own Tertiary Institutions on 31st January 2017 continues as the state government failed to meet up their demands.
In a communique issued by JAC, it noted that none of their 33 demands were fully addressed stressing that what they rather heard was a Radio/Press release which it described as mere propaganda.
The communique added that, out of consideration, JAC Congress of Kogi State University painfully scaled the 33 demands to five as minimum consideration for suspension. It stated the five demands as:
1. Payment of salaries and arrears to cleared, uncleared staff and omitted staff.
2. The re-screening conducted by all the Government Councils of all the State Tertiary Institutions should be suspended and approved by the Visitor without conditionalities and without delay.
3. The excess task fund should be given a define date for commencement.
4. Government should respect and honour the MOU signed between JAC Kogi State and Kogi State Government in March, 2017, with regard to the new tax policy introduced by Government. In the MOU, it was agreed that the new tax implement in February 2017 be refunded back in March 2017 salary and be put on hold until there is an agreement between organized Labour, JAC Kogi State and Kogi State Government.
5. Demand for Government response to submission made by the Governing Council of all Tertiary Institutions in the State as directed by the State Government in line with the mandate given to them 1st and 30th April 2017.
It noted that in line with this, all Essential Services except Security will be withdrawn from Monday 5th June, 2017 while advising its members to disregard any threat from government and management such as 'No "Work No Pay", Introduction of Register, Phone Call among others.
