OPINION: Reclaiming the Stolen People's Mandate, the Dust and the Trust on Justice | By Hamza Lamisi

It was Frederick Douglass who said "where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe". Where injustice rules, preaching peace and love would rather be a thing of mockery to the victims.

Before you go wild seeking acceptance, begging for love or brotherhood/sisterhood, let us first agree with our conscience. I think that is a good starting point for a morally upright person who understands the true essence of humanity.

On the 23rd of February 2019, the good people of Kogi Central Senatorial District left their various businesses, sacrificed their time and energy to queue under the hot sun just to exercise their franchise for the liberation dream being championed by Barr. Natasha Hadiza Akpoti irrespective of the platform the dream rides on. Albeit, Social Democratice Party, SDP Onumanta.

In what would have meant a foundation of a generational change in the lives of the people, some greedy, desperate and power-drunk individuals sat down at the mercy of our sweat and comfort of our collective patrimony to manipulate figures and force their square peg into the round hole of a dreamt better Kogi Central.

As if that wasn't enough crime against humanity, against fellow brothers and sisters, I mean crime against the innocent children and  the aged ones who wish to see a liberated land before grave call upon them. They rendered many efforts useless with violence, intimidation, harassment and outright destruction of people's trust and mandates.

Many supposed problem solvers reduced their ranks to agents of manipulation and vandalization in the name of party interest they unconscientiously placed ahead of PEOPLE's interest. This unrepentant acts reminded me of tales like "the sinking ship", "animal farm" and "things fall apart" well authored by men of virtue and foresight.

While their guilty conscience held them down, our determination projected us up and we held for tribunal to demand JUSTICE. Alas! Their rabbits have the speed but no hiding tactics. The day has broken so suddenly on their greedy rats who robbed all through the night while the starved farmers were asleep. Knowing the weight of the numerous crimes they have soiled their hands with, they resulted to mockery of what could mean an end to their inhumane excesses on the same people they are desperate to represent.

By our resolve, we are not makers of history, we are made by history. A resolution has been made to Kogi Central people to salvage them from the hands of the bloody emperors that live on wealth without labor. That resolution has not changed. Only some figures were manipulated by men. The position shall be given by God using the right people in the right position of authorities". This resolution has hit hard on their sleep and day dreams. They coiled back on their initial uproar, retracing their steps as if they could ever find where the fault lies.

They remixed the jingle of failure, seeking acceptance, calling for love and brotherhood. But all thou too late. Doing the right thing is far more honorable than a millions of apology and compensation. Some damages are irreplaceable and some scars will forever leave marks on the body of the victim. Who pays for that? When we got this far and deep in the absence of the so-preached peace and love, then let all emotions be shelved, all interest be pocketed and all brotherhood/sisterhood be laid to rest while we present ourselves before JUSTICE. That is the foundation of a lasting peace and love in any society, especially one that is as poorly managed as ours.

Besides, contesting an elective position is by constitution a thing of civic right, so voting too. Seeking Justice at the appropriate quarters is even more constitutional and more civic to exercise, especially where such is done to save a dangling future. Hence, reclaiming the stolen mandate is an extension of the Liberation cause we shall chart till the victorious end.

Like Haile Selassie said "throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph. We shall act and we shall render our voice unapologetically till the people's mandate is reclaimed.

To the patriotic Liberation Agents, it's invariably good to ponder over some words while tirelessly working and patiently waiting for the reclaiming of our STOLEN mandate.

It comes with agony and bitterness for the oppressor to see unavoidable defeat ahead of him and his cronicles. Especially when he has all the powers to soften the rock and harden the steam. You may face mockery for what you believe in. People have faced it and still conquered at last. Mother Theresa didn't give up, neither did the countless attacks on Mahatma Gandhi made him a coward. Magaret Thatcher wasn't an exception of discrimination and assaults. They all rose above challenges and laughed last even though death prevailed.

You may be questioned beyond what you can provide answers for. But we shall answer them perfectly in no distant time. After struggle comes freedom.

Let us borrow some leaves from Martin Luther King's words. That in this world, a man must either be anvil or hammer," meaning that he is either a molder of society or is molded by society.

Let's jam our teeth and hold close the wet lashes of our weeping eyes. For the victory is just at the corner, it's a moment of provocation, enthicement, temptation and the likes, but the journey so worth it that we bear a little more. It has become an adventure. Glories in failures; despairs in successes; all make the journey interesting and memorable in it's entirety.

Let's march forward not minding whose oaks is goard. We can only regret not standing up for truth. We can't regret doing otherwise. Let us stand firm to RECLAIM THE STOLEN MANDATE of having the best of us represent the rest of us as Senator Natasha Hadiza Akpoti sails the boat of Social Justice and Economic Development of Kogi Central, Kogi State, Nigeria.
