OPINION: Beyond the Whining and Groaning, It's Time to Make the Right Decision and Entrust Barr. Natasha With our Mandate | By Isah Bala

Rick Warren was right when he posits that, "We are products of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it."

Through vote selling, the highest bidder syndrome and other anomalies, the larger percentage of us sold our mandate, mortgaged our future and invariably contributed to our present sorry state and the gross misrepresentation we've experienced over the years but the question is, for how long we will continue to be groaning and whining over the mistakes of yesterdays that led us to our present predicament? For how long will we continue to be prisoners of our past?

As the curtain is declared open for campaign and marching towards the next election, it's time to right the wrongs of the past, it's time to stop whining and take a decisive step to defy the highest bidder syndrome and other ephemeral benefits at the polling booth and entrust our mandate with Barrister Natasha Hadiza Akpoti who has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that she's worthy of representing us at the upper chamber to consolidate on the struggle for ideal representation and agitation for our common patrimony to work for the masses.

What Kogi Central senatorial district needs presently is someone who will not be cowed in the committee of intellectuals, someone whose voice will be heard in defence of our rights and someone who will be ready to forfeit personal interest for the happiness and betterment of the constituents without thinking of direct benefits.

Forfeiting personal gain to give others happiness can change our present sorry state and this is what Barrister Natasha Hadiza Akpoti has been doing over the years. She believes the number of houses, the fleet of cars and the number of years one spent on earth aren't the determiners of fulfilled life but the number of life one is able to touch, the bad approach to governance one is able to change for good and issues of societal importance one is able to promote no matter the accompanying challenges and obstacles.

She has practically demonstrated this when she stood firm at the hallowed chamber in March this year to speak the truth against the political truth and unveiled to the millions of Nigerians and the world the mind boggling conspiracy behind Ajaokuta, the 12th largest steel industry in the world. She did this in a country where the rich and those at the helm of affairs are hell bent on milking the country's source of income that ought to serve the populace and perpetually make it their money bags, she did this amidst threat, odium and media loathe.

One will be spurred to ask how do people who follow the whole trend to this point brazenly went against their conscience and support a candidate who will rather trade their rights for the happiness of godfather, someone who claimed to have obtained a bigger paddle and boat only for the acclaimed beneficiaries of the giant stride to continue to be drowning by the day.

How do they reason, how do their conscience be at rest after mortgaging their future and that of their children with crumbs??

Adjuding from the antecedence, and the steps taken by Barr. Natasha after she decided to answer the people's call, it's no gainsay to say unequivocally that she has the charisma, the acumen, the exposure, qualifications and the readiness to represent Kogi Central at the upper chamber and change the narrative.

After publicly displaying her credentials, she took a step further to become the first senatorial candidate in Kogi Central to publish her manifesto publicly for people to read and bring forth questions and suggestions.

If we really want to be great, then we must eschew self-centeredness, avarice and anything that led us to this sorry state.

As aptly captured by J.K. Rowling of the blessed memory, “…We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already, we have the power to imagine better.”

We do not need soothsayer  to tell us who to vote for, look into the antecedence and makes the right decision today for a better tomorrow. We have the power to make the right decision and change the baton.
